Reader Response Draft 2

In the article “Moving on Mars” (2019), the European Space Agency (ESA) documented the locomotion system of Rosalind Franklin which was created for the ExoMars mission in 2023. The system combines several different components to traverse the various terrains of Mars. The article states that the wheels of other rovers tend to get stuck, while carrying out its mission on Mars, thus ESA implemented Wheel-walking on the Rosalind Franklin. Wheel-walking mimics leg motion and solves the recurring issue of stuck wheels. The system can drive individual wheels and independently rotate the axes to change the rover’s height and angle according to the surrounding terrain. In the slides “ First Experimental investigations on Wheel-Walking for improving Triple-Bogie rover locomotion performances'' (2015), the ESA stated that Rosalind Franklin’s locomotion system is based on a triple-bogie concept made up of two lateral bogies and a transverse bogie. It is equipped with adaptable metal whee...

Summary Draft 1: Rosalind Franklin Locomotion System

In the article “Moving on Mars" (2019), the European Space Agency (ESA) documented the locomotion system of Rosalind Franklin which was created for the ExoMars mission in 2023. The system combines several different components to traverse the various terrain of Mars. From past experiences, the wheels of other rovers tend to get stuck, while carrying out its mission on Mars, thus ESA implemented Wheel-walking on the Rosalind Franklin. Wheel-walking mimics leg motion and solves the recurring issue of stuck wheels. The system can drive individual wheels and independently rotate the axes to change the rover’s height and angle according to the surrounding terrain.  On top of the wheel-walking method, the triple-bogie locomotion system is utilized to conquer large obstacles, while it's adaptable metal wheels allow for more fluid control and motion when the rover meets obstacles. The motion control of the rover is further aided by inclinometers and gyroscopes. References European Sp...

Self-Introduction

Subject: Self Introduction Dear Prof Brad, My name is Clement Low, I studied Computer Engineering in Temasek Polytechnic which lead me to further my studies in Robotics System Engineering(RSE) in SIT.  My reason I joined RSE was due to my final year of polytechnic where I participated in World Skills Singapore, Mobile Robotics. In that competition I widen my knowledge in robotics and the possibilities it can actually achieve, thus applied for RSE as one of my choices.  I have interest in coding or anything that has electricity running through it. Recently got into smart home gadgets like Google Home, smart switches and sensors. Its an advantage when you are able to install these devices yourself and make modifications due to what you learn in school. Always makes me feel like what I learn is useful in this fast progressing country and will be in the future. In terms of communication skills, I think I do not have issue speaking to an audience but there are key things that i fin...

Critical Thinking: The Soul of Communication

Communication is the way to connect people together, its how we express our ideas and get people to agree it. As leaders in a work context, we should have the ability to give clear and concise speeches to get people on the same page.  We can break the key words down and further elaborate communication. Effective communication can be categories into one way speeches or two way engagements. In the one way speeches, we must be clear of what we are trying to express, ensure that its full in content and deliver it across to the audience. In two way engagements we must ensure that the conversation is meaningful and relatable to the other as well. Elaborating Critical Thinking. Critical thinking is the knowledge of the topic and host a meaningful conversation. As stated in the above paragraph, communication is to be full in content, which is related to critical thinking. With this logic you could even say that without critical thinking, communication seems like an empty shell. Understandi...

Mini Task 1

“I contend that we (engineers) are undervalued because of our widespread inability to explain what we do to the general public (and why it is so important). It is one of the hardest goals to accomplish, to be able to boil down difficult concepts into a short and easily understood presentation or elevator pitch.” Marybeth Miceli, President, Miceli Infrastructure Consulting, USA (2011)
